How It Works
How It Works
Implementing Safer Speed automated speed enforcement involves a structured process to ensure effective and efficient deployment. The typical timeline from initial interest to full implementation includes the following steps:
Stakeholder Engagement: Safer Speed (SP) collaborates with local authorities to understand community needs and objectives.
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU): An agreement outlining responsibilities, financial arrangements, and program specifics is established.
Speed Studies: If desired, SP can conduct comprehensive multiple day speed studies to assess traffic volumes and speeding issues, identifying high-risk zones.
Strategic Planning: Based on data, SP develops a tailored enforcement strategy, including equipment selection and placement.
Regulatory Compliance: SP manages the permitting process, ensuring adherence to local and state regulations, which may involve obtaining speed detection device permits.
Community Outreach: SP can provide customizable social media, email templates and timeline guidance on implementing a robust public information and education (PI&E) program prior to full enforcement, engaging with schools, parents, and the broader community to raise awareness about the upcoming enforcement measures.
Equipment Deployment: Installation of enforcement systems, such as LIDAR-based speed detection cameras, is completed.
System Testing: Comprehensive testing ensures all equipment functions correctly and integrates seamlessly with existing infrastructure.
Citation Issuance: After the warning period, official citations are issued to violators exceeding speed limits by a specified margin (e.g., 10 mph over the limit).
Continuous Evaluation: SP provides ongoing maintenance, data analysis, and program adjustments to ensure sustained effectiveness in reducing speeding and enhancing safety.
